6 Questions to Ask Your Photographer

Updated: Feb 5

Deciding on a wedding photographer is a huge task. These are the photos that you will look back on for years to come and that will be shared with your kids and grandkids! Your photographer is one of the most important people on your big day because once your wedding day is over, you'll only have photos to look back on. Your photographer is also one of the people you'll be spending the most time with on your big day since they'll be there to capture all the moments. Since you'll be spending so much time with your photographer, it's important to get to know your photographer and to know what kind of services they offer before hiring them. Here are 6 questions you should ask before booking them.

Question #1: Do you have my date available?

Arguably THE most important question, you should ask if the date you're planning on saying "I do" is available for the photographer. You don't want to just assume someone's available on your date!

QUESTION #2: How many hours are included in the package?

As a fellow photographer, I think it is important to be upfront about my prices from the very beginning. But that's not always the case. Are the groomsmen going to go golfing in the morning that you want photographed? Do you want the photographer to be there late at night to capture your sparkler exit? Figure out how long you want the photographer to work for you on your big day to see if they're able to work for you for the entire day or not.

Make sure to ask about a set number of hours that a photographer works for so you know exactly what you're getting. The last thing you (or the photographer!) wants is them missing a moment of your day that they didn't know about beforehand.

QUESTION #3: How experienced are you at taking photos in different lighting situations?

If your wedding is inside (even if you're just getting ready inside), you don't want to end up with extremely dark or overly bright photos. On the other side, you don't want to be given photos taken from outside where the photographer didn't adjust their camera settings to accommodate for the sun vs. a cloudy moment.

QUESTION #4: Do you make a family photo list?

The last thing anyone (you and the photographer!) wants AFTER the wedding is to realize that an important photo op for you wasn't captured! Ask your wedding photographer how they make sure they capture all the traditional pictures you and your family members are going to want.

QUESTION #5: Do you shoot both in color and black and white?

Some couples like having the option of both color AND black and white, while some couples find it extremely overwhelming. It all depends on your personal preference honestly. However, if you're wanting, or not wanting, the option, make sure to ask your wedding photographer!

QUESTION #6: What happens if you are ill or there is an emergency?

Ask your wedding photographer what would happen if they suddenly couldn't be at your wedding. No one can see into the future and know what could potentially happen to your wedding photographer the week before your wedding. If something comes up, will your photographer just cancel and leave you to scramble for a new photographer last minute? Or do they have a list of backup photographers they know and trust that they could ask to fill in for them?
